900sq m Silicon Tube Extrusion Cleanroom

When the world's largest manufacturer of peristaltic pumps and silicon tubing were looking to invest £1million in a new factory and Cleanroom facility, they called on Cleanroom Installation Services Limited to design, manufacture and install the cleanroom.

The 50 x 15m Class 7 Main room extended to 900mƒ with change facilities, material transfer hatches and plant mezzanine.


After successfully winning the project following a competitive tender process, CRIS undertook the whole project from the client's initial design brief, taking on board their specific requirements and details required for their processes.

The factory was specially designed to blend into the local environment and required the main contractor to remove many tons of subsoil to enable the rear of the building to sit into the sloping site. The finished building is sympathetically finished to again blend into the surroundings to minimise the impact on local residents including a local school.

As a new build and with a green concrete floor slab, CRIS had to specify and lay a damp-proof membrane that would enable the build to progress but not give long-term issues with the seam-welded vinyl flooring the client had specified.

Working with the flooring manufacturers, Altro, CRIS came up with the perfect solution and the build continued as soon as possible after the slab was laid.

Walls and ceilings were constructed from composite panels with white Foodsafe facings and a PIR core. The 6m span ceiling panels were designed as walk-on for maintenance purposes and were hung from the roof structure 6m above. Snow loading deflection also had to be incorporated.

Double gasketed and sealed Cleanroom light units were installed to provide 500Lux and emergency backup units were incorporated.

Matching door units complete with interlock systems completed the clinical environment and special removable panels to allow later machine installation and removal were installed.

The Air Handling equipment was located on a 20m x 6m mezzanine platform at one end of the room. This supported the AHU and associated equipment, some pieces of ductwork being 1.8m in diameter.

The mezzanine was designed with the maximum upright centres to minimise the number of uprights visible inside the room. Portilisation of the structure was required to provide sufficient lateral bracing.

Return air ducts were created externally and the majority of ductwork was hung using the "Gripple" system.

A 5m externally mounted chiller and 2000 L buffer vessel coupled with control systems and software looked after the close humidity controlled required for the clients process.

The project was completed on time and, when validated, achieved in excess of the required classification.
